Kenya Gondola Shelving Project: 3×40HQ Supply After Sample Approval
The buyer reviewed and approved three custom configurations during a 15-piece sample stage before WZ Rack supplied three 40HQ containers for installation in Kenya.
Project Outcome:
WZ Rack completed a 15-piece sample stage covering three custom gondola shelving configurations for a commercial buyer in Kenya. After the buyer reviewed, revised and approved the samples, the project proceeded to a bulk supply of three 40HQ containers.
The Kenya buyer initially approached WZ Rack for a customized gondola shelving system rather than a single standard shelving model. During the sample stage, the buyer evaluated three configurations, requested specification adjustments and confirmed the revised samples before authorizing bulk production.
The final system included single-sided wall shelving, double-sided gondola shelving and matching endcaps. The confirmed configuration used 1,200 mm-wide shelving sections, six display levels including the base shelf, white powder-coated steel, perforated back panels, blue price strips, front wire stoppers and selected custom mesh end panels. The project shelf rating was up to 150 kg UDL per shelf under the approved dimensions and support configuration.
Each container batch required approximately 7–14 working days for production, quality control, packing and container loading after specifications were confirmed. The products were delivered to Kenya and installed.
To protect the buyer’s confidentiality, the company name, city and store details are not publicly disclosed. The sample, specification, production and shipment information presented in this case is based on WZ Rack’s project records.

What Did the Kenya Buyer Need?
The buyer initially asked WZ Rack for gondola shelving but did not provide a complete floor plan, dimensioned drawing or finished store layout. WZ Rack therefore worked from the buyer’s product requirements and helped calculate the shelving quantities needed for the project.
The project required more than a standard catalogue model. The buyer needed a coordinated supermarket shelving system rather than one standard catalogue unit. The confirmed requirements included:
- single-sided shelving for wall or perimeter display;
- double-sided gondola shelving for central retail aisles;
- matching endcaps;
- deeper 500 mm base shelves and 450 mm upper shelves;
- six display levels including the base shelf;
- perforated steel back panels;
- white powder-coated components;
- blue price strips;
- front wire stoppers to help prevent products from falling;
- custom mesh panels at selected exposed ends.
Price, production time, load capacity, appearance, container use and customization all affected the purchasing decision. Customization was particularly important because the buyer required a coordinated combination of dimensions, colors, back panels and accessories rather than an off-the-shelf configuration.
Why Did WZ Rack Produce Samples Before the Bulk Order?
WZ Rack produced 15 sample pieces covering three sample configurations before the three-container order. The sample stage allowed the buyer to evaluate the physical structure, dimensions, perforated panels, shelf arrangement, white-and-blue finish and accessories before bulk production.
For a customized retail shelving project, a physical sample can verify details that are difficult to judge from a quotation or reference image alone, including:
- the visual proportion of the 1,200 mm-wide section;
- the relationship between 500 mm base shelves and 450 mm upper shelves;
- shelf and bracket engagement;
- perforated-panel alignment;
- blue price-strip fit;
- front-stopper fit and height;
- powder-coated appearance;
- compatibility between the main gondola and custom end components.
The sample-to-bulk sequence is one of the strongest pieces of commercial evidence in this project: the buyer did not move directly from an enquiry to three containers. The configuration was physically reviewed and adjusted before mass production.
What Shelving Configurations Were Supplied?
Single-Sided Wall Shelving
The single-sided wall shelving used a 1,200 mm section width and a 2,000 mm overall height. Each display face had a 500 mm base shelf and five 450 mm upper shelves, providing six display levels when the base shelf is included.
The taller 2,000 mm profile increases vertical display capacity around the store perimeter. White perforated panels provide a consistent back surface, while the blue price strips and white front stoppers support product identification and safer merchandising.
Double-Sided Gondola Shelving
The double-sided gondola shelving sections were 1,200 mm wide and 1,800 mm high. Each side used a 500 mm base shelf and five 450 mm upper shelves.
The confirmed overall depth was approximately 1,080 mm at the base and approximately 980 mm across the upper-shelf area. These figures include the two display faces and central structure under the approved project configuration.
Double-sided gondola shelving was used to provide display capacity from both sides of central retail aisles. The project combined deeper shelves with a 150 kg UDL requirement, so the shelf, bracket and upright specifications must be considered as one engineered assembly.
Matching Endcap Shelving
The matching endcap display configuration was approximately 1,100 mm wide and 1,800 mm high, with a 500 mm base shelf and five 450 mm upper shelves. The unit used the same white perforated-panel appearance, six-level configuration, blue price strips and front stoppers as the main shelving system.
Matching the endcaps to the main gondola system helped maintain consistent dimensions, colors and merchandising details at the ends of the aisle runs.
Custom Mesh End Panels
The mesh panels visible at the exposed ends of the assembled sample were a custom requirement, not a universal standard component. These panels provide a visually open boundary at the end of the shelving structure while supporting the buyer’s requested appearance.

How Were Appearance and Accessories Customized?
The buyer selected a white-and-blue finish as a project requirement rather than a published brand-color specification. The main structural components, back panels and shelves were white, while blue price strips created a consistent accent along every display level.
The approved samples also included:
- adjustable shelf positioning;
- blue shelf-edge price strips;
- white wire front stoppers;
- custom mesh end panels;
- additional hooks, baskets or related accessories included within the wider order.
How Was the 150 kg UDL Requirement Checked?
The Kenya project specification required each shelf to support up to 150 kg as a uniformly distributed load, or UDL, under the approved configuration. WZ Rack reviewed this requirement against the complete shelving assembly rather than relying on shelf-board thickness alone.
The approved structure combined a 1,200 mm shelf width, 500 mm base shelves or 450 mm upper shelves, 0.6 mm formed shelf boards, 2.5 mm brackets, 2.0 mm uprights and the confirmed support arrangement. Changing any of these factors can change the final load capacity.
After trial assembly, WZ Rack recorded a physical load demonstration on the factory sample. The video shows four adults standing on the assembled base shelf while the shelf board, brackets, uprights and adjustable feet remain engaged. This provides direct visual evidence of the sample’s short-duration stability under a substantial temporary live load.
For procurement comparison, buyers should confirm all three elements together:
- the rated load and whether it is UDL or a concentrated load;
- the shelf dimensions, brackets, uprights and support configuration to which the rating applies; and
- the supplier’s test record or agreed inspection method.
How Were the Shelving Components Packed and Shipped?
The shelving components were protected with bubble wrap and cartons for shipment. Flat-packed component organization helps use container space efficiently and separates uprights, panels, shelves, brackets and accessories for handling after arrival.

FAQ
Planning a Similar Gondola Shelving Project?
A useful project enquiry should include the required shelving types, section widths, heights, shelf depths, display levels, UDL requirements, back-panel type, colors, accessories, estimated quantities and destination port.
WZ Rack can review a mixed requirement covering single-sided wall shelving, double-sided gondola shelving and matching endcaps. If a complete floor plan is not yet available, a written specification or reference image can begin the discussion, followed by drawings or samples before bulk production.
